If the slag be the chief constituent in a body, such as for building embank- ments, making filter beds or cast-blocks, experience has CERAMIC CHEMISTRY. 33 shown that it should contain about 40 of silica, 40 of lime, and 20 of alumina. Slags containing under 33 per cent. Si0 2 and 14 per cent. A1 2 3 , or over 45 per cent. CaO, are apt to disintegrate, while very silicious slags crack or fly to pieces on cooling. Manganese and iron are always present in slags, a fact which limits their employment to coloured ware. Granulated slag, as used in making slag cement, has the composition : SiO 2 27 to 35 per cent.
