Slags containing under 33 per cent. Si0 2 and 14 per cent. A1 2 3 , or over 45 per cent. CaO, are apt to disintegrate, while very silicious slags crack or fly to pieces on cooling. Manganese and iron are always present in slags, a fact which limits their employment to coloured ware. Granulated slag, as used in making slag cement, has the composition : SiO 2 27 to 35 per cent.
